Con 30 artículos, es considerado el documento más traducido del mundo —a más de 500 idiomas— y ha inspirado las constituciones de varios Estados y democracias recientes.El texto repudia instituciones tenebrosas que han perseguido a la humanidad a lo largo de la historia, como la esclavitud y la tortura. Garantiza el asilo de los perseguidos, defiende el derecho a la educación gratuita, la libertad de reunión y la propiedad privada y establece sabiamente el principio de igualdad: todos los seres humanos nacen libres e iguales en dignidad y derechos, sin distinción alguna, es decir, de raza, color, sexo, idioma, religión, opinión política o de otro tipo, origen nacional o social, riqueza, nacimiento o cualquier otra situación ”.En la votación se abstuvieron la Unión Soviética, Bielorrusia, Ucrania, Checoslovaquia, Polonia, Yugoslavia, Arabia Saudita y Sudáfrica.
