What is WELD-ON 16 Acrylic Plastic Cement used for?

WELD-ON 16 Acrylic Plastic Cement is specifically designed for bonding acrylic and other plastics such as polycarbonate and PVC. This solvent-based adhesive creates a strong bond by chemically fusing the surfaces together. It is ideal for use in various applications, such as fabricating aquariums, display cases, and signs, where clear aesthetics and durability are important.

How do you apply WELD-ON 16?

To apply WELD-ON 16, clean the surfaces to be bonded and ensure they are dry. Use the applicator tip provided to apply a small amount of cement evenly to one surface, then firmly press the two surfaces together. For best results, hold them in place for a few minutes to allow the bond to set. This method is effective for both professional applications and DIY projects.

Is WELD-ON 16 safe to use indoors?

WELD-ON 16 should be used in well-ventilated areas because it emits strong fumes that can be harmful if inhaled in enclosed spaces. It’s essential to wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves and a mask, when using the cement. Many users apply it in workshops or garages, ensuring good airflow during the bonding process.

What surfaces can WELD-ON 16 bond?

WELD-ON 16 is effective for bonding acrylic, polycarbonate, and many other plastics. It works well on non-porous surfaces, making it a popular choice for plastic repairs and fabrications. Whether you’re repairing a broken acrylic display or constructing a new project, this cement provides a strong bond that holds up under various conditions.

Can WELD-ON 16 be used for outdoor applications?

Yes, WELD-ON 16 can be used for outdoor applications. Once cured, it forms a durable bond that can withstand exposure to environmental elements, making it suitable for projects like outdoor signage and acrylic displays. However, it is advisable to protect the bonded area from extreme temperature variations for optimal longevity.

How long does WELD-ON 16 take to set?

WELD-ON 16 typically starts to set within minutes of application, but a full bond may take several hours to achieve. For optimal curing times, avoid disturbing the bonded surfaces until they have had enough time to set properly. This fast-setting nature makes it excellent for projects that require quick turnaround times.

What is the viscosity of WELD-ON 16?

WELD-ON 16 has a medium viscosity, enabling controlled application without excessive dripping. This helps in precise bonding of acrylic parts where accuracy is crucial. Users appreciate this viscosity for applications in tight spaces or intricate designs, as it allows for easy maneuverability when applying the cement.

Can WELD-ON 16 be painted or finished after curing?

Once cured, WELD-ON 16 itself cannot be painted due to its smooth plastic finish. However, the surrounding areas can often be painted or finished without affecting the bond. For projects that require a uniform appearance, consider preparing the acrylic surface with special primers designed for plastics before painting.

How do you clean up excess WELD-ON 16?

To clean up excess WELD-ON 16 before it cures, use an appropriate solvent such as acetone or isopropyl alcohol. Apply it gently with a cloth or cotton swab to avoid smearing on the acrylic surface. This step is crucial for maintaining a clean finish, especially in projects where aesthetics are key.
